The Viswakudi tank in Veppanthattai block has been remaining dry due to total failure of monsoon in the last three months. It is only during this period that the tank realises maximum water which is used for irrigation. But, the nearly-nil rainfall during the North East monsoon had made it totally barren.

Built across the Kallar stream, the tank can store 30.67 million cubic feet of water. The dam is 615 metres long with two sluices and radial shutters. The work was executed at an estimate of about Rs. 32 crore.

According to sources, a plan has been drafted to develop it as a tourism-attraction centre. The Public Works Department has drafted a proposal for about Rs. 1.50 crore seeking funds to provide necessary tourism and entertainment infrastructure on about three acres of land available at the foot of the tank.

The plan included setting up a park with gardens and lawns.

Saplings of shade-giving trees and flowering plants will be grown here. An Inspection Bangalow would be constructed.

As part of providing swift access to the tank, the PWD had taken up laying the road to a length of about 1.2 km from Annamangalam up to the tank. The plan has been designed in such a manner that it will be one of the important tourism centres in the district.
