Students join in the protest; agitators raise slogans against the State and Central governments

Even as protests against the ban on jallikatu continued, the event was conducted in a few villages of the district on Tuesday.

Defying the Supreme Court ban, the organisers let loose the bulls at Navalurkuttapattu for the second consecutive day on Tuesday.

More than 50 bulls were said to have been let out in an open ground at the village.

Bulls belonging to Tiruverumbur, Thuvakudi and neighbouring villages were let loose in the event. Watched by many spectators, youths chased the bulls in an attempt to tame them.

Similarly, villagers of Pottamettupatti and N. Poolampatti near Manapparai conducted jallikattu, although it was largely unorganised.

More than 20 bulls were released in the events. Scores of spectators from neighbouring villages participated.

Meanwhile, protesting against the ban on jallikattu, students of various colleges held a silent protest near the Collectorate.

A large number of students took part in it. Members belonging to Tamil Desiya Iyakkam staged a protest near the Railway junction, demanding the Central government to bring an ordinance so as to clear hurdles on conducting jallikattu. District secretary of Tamilaga Vivasayigal Sangam MP. Chinnadurai and others participated in it.

Similarly, a group of students formed a human chain along the Cauvery bridge from Mela Chinthamani to Mambalasalai demanding permission for jallikattu.

A youngster belonging to Varaganeri made an attempt to self immolate himself at Chinthamani, protesting against the ban on jallikattu.

The incident occurred when a group of students were staging a protest. However, the policemen foiled the attempt of Sathish Kumar (22) to pour kerosene on himself.

Three separate cases were registered against more than 25 persons under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act for organising jallikattu in Vengaikurichi, Muthapudayanpatti and Avarankurichi in Tiruchi district.

Karur

More than 1,000 agitators, mostly students, social media friends and members of Congress, took part in the protest held in Karur in support of jallikattu.

Condemning the arrest of agitators at Alanganallur in Madurai district, they raised slogans against the State and Central governments for failing to listen to the demands of the people.

In Pudukottai, villagers resorted to a 'road roko' at Keeramangalam near here demanding the restoration of 'jallikattu'.

The villagers also wanted immediate release of those arrested at Madurai and elsewhere in the State.
