Cricket tournament organised in Tiruchi

The Tiruchi Premier League (TPL) Twenty-20 cricket tournament lived up to its billing as an entertainer as it rained sixes and fours right through the event.

The tournament, organised by the MAP Trust here with Vasan Estates as title sponsor, featured eight teams – Township Titans, Rockfort Riders, Manapparai Supersonic, Srirangam Super Stars, Cantonment Super Kings, Williams Road Warriors, Thillainagar Victory Royals and K.K. Nagar Kings.

In all, 31 matches were played.

A total of 7902 runs were scored for the loss of 437 wickets in 1,159 overs.

A whopping 170 sixes were hit in the tournament that also witnessed batsmen striking 737 boundaries.

“TPL provided an opportunity for the young cricketers to showcase their skills.

Playing in front of the local crowd was a great experience for the youngsters,” said G. Vinoth, vice-president, TPL.

K.K. Nagar Kings and Srirangam Super Stars made it to the final.

Batting first, Srirangam amassed 182 runs in 20 overs. However, N. Vishukumar hit a six of the penultimate ball of the match and made sure K.K. Nagar got past the finish line. The winning team received a cash award of Rs. 3 lakh and the runner-up Rs. 1.5 lakh.

E. Sivakumar (Srirangam Super Stars) was adjudged man-of-the-tournament, while V. Pradeep Krishna (K.K. Nagar Kings) received man-of-the-final award. R. Raghavendran of SBIOA Matriculation Higher Secondary School and N. Praveen Kumar of St. John's Vestry Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School were declared best schoolboy cricketers.

K.N. Ramajayam, president, Tamil Nadu Basketball Association, gave away the prizes in the presence of K.G. Muralidharan, secretary, Tiruchi District Cricket Association; Ravi Murugaiah, chairman, Vasan Estates; and D. Thilak Chander, chairman, TPL.
