College to establish skill training centre near Lalgudi

Buoyed by the success in fostering entrepreneurship among people in Sirugamani village and Arumbugal Nagar in Kamanayakkanpalayam village through skill-oriented training centres, the Shrimati Indira Gandhi College has proposed to establish a similar centre at Angari near Lalgudi.

Principal K. Meena said this during the release of ‘ESSW MAG-2010', a magazine of the Social Work Department. The magazine was released by P.N. Narayana Raja, Principal, Madurai Institute of Social Science, Madurai.

The social outreach programmes in the forms of trainings, street plays, student seminars and special lectures meant to create awareness among rural community have been documented in the magazine. The Social Work department had linkages with the District Rehabilitation Centres and non-government organisations, she said, and specified the society-oriented projects of the College like IT on Wheels, and activities of Internet Users' Club of Tiruchi.

In his key note address, K. Govindaraju, President, Tamil Nadu Board of Continuing Education, Chennai, and Director, SEVAI, Allur, listed the opportunities for social workers, and the role of NGOs and women self help groups for uplift of rural populace. Dr. Raja said the spirit of sharing, thinking of the present, and a positive attitude constituted individual maturity as far as social workers were concerned. He described the placement opportunities for social workers in government sectors and multinational companies, besides NGOs.
