The Executive Director, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) A.V. Krishnan on Saturday called upon the vendors to build capacity and capability so as to grow along with the BHEL.

Inaugurating a day-long Vendor Meet organised by the Fluidised Bed Combustion and Heat Recovery Steam Generator group of BHEL here, Mr. Krishnan urged the vendors to bring in newer technologies and deliver products on time.

Stating that growth opportunities were good, he reminded the vendors of the competition from multinational companies. Mr. Krishnan expressed confidence that the BHEL would complete all the 11th plan power projects assigned to it on time.

Citing the doubling of BHEL’s capacity and capability through continuous investments, he said “we are sure we will be able to put all these projects into track”.

On the thermal, nuclear and gas power generation side, wherein the Tiruchi unit of BHEL is a contributor, he said the unit would soon declare the completion of the second phase of expansion to produce 10,000 MW a year.

Every unit of BHEL was undergoing massive capacity augmentation programme and this meant that the capacity would go up to 15,000 MW at the corporate level. The third phase expansion, to increase the unit’s production capacity to 15,000 MW and the corporate’s capacity to 20,000 MW would immediately be taken up to be completed by 2011-12, he said.

He said private players would have a total capacity of 40,000 MW a year sooner, though it did not mean anything to BHEL in maintaining its position as the market leader. To retain the position, he urged the BHEL’s business partners to focus on the critical area of state-of-the-art technology.

The global competition had put certain pressures on us which could be overcome by improving the existing and leveraging new technologies to attain optimised solutions.

As the BHEL expected to get bulk order from the National Thermal Power Corporation for setting up 11 sets of 660 MW and 800 MW sets, for which discussions are almost over, Mr. Krishnan said that BHEL was working out on an annual requirement which would save on time. He wanted the vendors also to work with BHEL and arrive at the requirement of BHEL in the next two to three years.

The Vendor Meet aimed at bringing about 30 vendors of BHEL selling four different mechanical and electrical products such as non-metallic expansion joints, transmitters, knight gate valves and flow nozzle and orifices.
