About 37 members of the Naam Tamizhar Katchi were taken into custody after they attempted to lay siege to Karnataka Bank here on Thursday, demanding Tamil Nadu’s due share of water in the Cauvery by Karnataka and protection to Tamils in Karnataka.

Carrying the party flags, the cadre came on motorcycles to lay siege to the bank at Thillai Nagar area. A posse of police personnel were deployed well in advance to arrest the party members.

The protestors led by the party’s district secretary R. Prabhu raised slogans in support of their demands when they were taken into custody.

The party members wanted necessary steps to be taken to ensure protection of Tamils residing in Karnataka. They said the present release of Cauvery water by Karnataka was inadequate to take up cultivation and demanded release of the State’s due share of the river water.

They also wanted a retired judge to look into the actual water levels at Krishanaraja Sagar and Kabini dams in Karnataka and submit a report. The police arrested the protestors and accommodated them in a marriage hall. They were later released in the evening, police sources said.
