Abhishekams performed for Sadhaya vizha

Special abhishekams were performed on the deity Brahadeeswara at the Big temple here on Thursday as part of the Sadhaya Vizha (coronation day) of Raja Raja Cholan.

Forty-seven types of abhishekams were performed in the presence of Ayyappa Swamigal of Thiruverkadu including sandal, milk, butter, tender coconut, ghee and finally 108 Kalasams. Hundreds of people witnessed the abhishekam along with M.S. Shanmugham, Thanjavur district collector, T. Selvam, Chairman of the Sadhaya Vizha Committee, Babaji Raja Bhonsle, senior prince and hereditary trustee of the Palace Devasthanam.

Earlier in the day, the collector garlanded the statue of Raja Raja Cholan outside the temple. Thirumurais were taken in procession. In the evening, idols of Lord Bhrahadeeswara and Goddess Periya Nayagai were taken on Rishabha Vahanam in procession. The idol of Raja Raja Cholan was also taken on a procession. The Big temple was beautifully illuminated for the occasion.
