66 detained under Goondas Act last year

A total number of 66 persons were detained under the Goondas Act and seven under the Bootleggers Act by the city police authorities during 2010.

Notorious gang leader Guna alias Gunaseelan who was involved in several murder and extortion cases and rowdy elements including Kottapattu Jai, Sundarapandi and ‘Abaya' Bhaskar were among those detained under the Goondas Act last year in an effort to control rowdies. The number of prohibition cases booked last year was 489.

A police press release here said fool proof security arrangements were made during the visits of several VIPs and special dignitaries to the city last year. The release further said Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi and the Governor of Tamil Nadu Surjit Singh Barnala had visited the city three times each.

The former Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa had visited twice, while Union Home Minister P.Chidambaram and Deputy Chief Minister M.K.Stalin had made 17 visits respectively to the city last year.
