57.60 mm rain at junction


The district received widespread showers on Friday with Tiruchi Junction registering the maximum rainfall of 57.60 mm during the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 a.m. on Saturday. The following is the chief amount of rainfall recorded in other parts of the district during the same period (in mm): Golden Rock 48.40; Kuppampatti 43; Nandhiyar head 36; Thenparanadu 33; Thuvakudi 32; Tiruchi Airport 23; Vathalai Anicut 19; Navalur Kuttapattu 16.20; Kallakudi 15.20; Pullampadi 12.80 and Lalgudi 8.90. The district received an average rainfall of 14.97 mm.



A 45-day government exhibition is to be held in the city from the second week of December. The exhibition to be held at the St.John’s Vestry Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School would feature stall by various government departments, apart from entertainment enclosures. District Collector K.S. Palanisamy, who chaired a meeting to review the arrangements for the exhibition here on Friday, instructed the corporation to provide adequate basic amenities at the venue.

Online patta


The trial run of online patta transfers is under way in Tiruverumbur and Thottiyam taluks. The system has already been introduced on a pilot basis in Srirangam taluk, Collector K.S. Palanisamy said in a press release. The system used the Tamil Nilam software for patta transfers and members of the public in the taluks could avail the facility through the common service centres in the respective taluks, he said.

New bus shelter

at Marakkadai

A modern bus shelter with solar powered lights at Marakkadai, established at a cost of Rs.7 lakh from the Tiruchi East MLA’s Local Area Development Fund, was declared open by R. Manoharan, Chief Whip, on Saturday. Srirangam MLA C. Valarmathi, Mayor A. Jaya, and Deputy Mayor J. Srinivasan were present. Nine such shelters have been opened so far in the city at a cost of Rs. 66.50 lakh, a corporation press release said.

Winners of

recitation contest

About 240 students from about 48 schools participated in the Arunachala Aksharamanamalai and Upadesa Undhiyar recitation competitions organised by Sri Ramana Sath Sangam in the city on Saturday. The following were the first prize winners of the competitions organised in three different categories: Arunachala Aksharamanamalai – High and Higher Secondary: M. Saranya, Seva Sangam Girls Higher Secondary School; Middle School: K. Balaji, Chinmaya Vidyalaya; Primary: M. Raheemunisha, Urumu Dhanalakshmi Vidyalaya. Upadesa Undhiyar – High and Higher Secondary School: R. Sowmya, Kamakoti Vidyalaya; Middle School: S. Sayee Kruthika, Sri Akilandeswari Vidyalaya, and Primary School: M. Rahana Parvin, Sri Guru Vidhyapeetam.
