The 66th Republic Day was celebrated with patriotic fervour across the district on Monday.
At a function organised by the district administration at the Armed Reserve ground here, Collector K.S. Palanisamy unfurled the national flag and took the salute.
He inspected the ceremonial march past and honoured 48 freedom fighters.
The Collector distributed Chief Minister’s medal to 57 police personnel and handed over certificates to 20 government officials in appreciation of their service.
As the model of code of conduct is in force in view of the Srirangam by election, there was no distribution of welfare assistance to beneficiaries on the occasion, official sources said.
School students performed cultural programmes. Commissioner of Police Sanjay Mathur, Inspector General of Police, Central Zone M. Ramasubramani and senior police and revenue officials participated.
At the Employees Provident Fund Organisation, the Regional Provident Fund Commissioner G. Sivakumar hoisted the national flag.
Commissioner of Central Excise and Service Tax, Tiruchi Sansar Chand unfurled the national flag at the office campus here. At the Congress office, the party’s south district president R.C. Babu hoisted the national flag and distributed sweets.
