25 nominations received for Tiruchi West by-election

Scrutiny of nominations today; last date for withdrawal is September 29

A total of 25 nominations were received for the Tiruchi West by-election, as the filing of nominations came to a close on Monday. The filing of nominations for the October 13 by-election commenced on September 19.

Fifteen nomination papers were received on the final day today. M.Mohamed Sadiq (India Jananayaka Katchi), S.Kalasthri and Habeebur Rahman, both of the Akila India Uzhavar Uzhaippalar Katchi, A.Mohamed Abid Sulthan and S.Mohamed Anwardeen, both of Indian National League and 10 independents filed the papers today.

M.Paranjothi of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), V.Aruljothi (AIADMK dummy), K.N.Nehru of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), K.N.Sekaran (DMK-dummy), S.Sureshkumar (Lok Satta Party) have already filed their papers. The list included 17 Independents.

The by-election was caused due to the demise of State Environment Minister, N. Mariyam Pichai in a road accident near here in May.

The scrutiny of nominations will take place on September 27 and September 29 is the last date for the withdrawal of nomination paper. Polling will be held on October 13 and the counting is slated for October 17.

Model code

Election officials should get their doubts clarified and ensure free and fair conduct of the by-election to Tiruchi West Assembly constituency, said R.K.Pathak, Election Observer (General).

Addressing polling officials here on Monday, Mr.Pathak expressed the hope that the personnel drafted for polling duty would utilise the experience gained during the previous elections.

He asked the polling officials to strictly adhere to the model code of conduct and the guidelines issued by the Election Commission for the smooth and free conduct of the by-election.
