1.7 kg smuggled gold seized

Officers of the Customs Air Intelligence Unit seized 1.7 kilograms of gold smuggled by five air passengers at the international airport here on Thursday. The five passengers arrived here by an Air Asia flight from Kuala Lumpur when they were detained by the Air Intelligence Unit officers on suspicion.

Airport sources said the passengers had concealed gold in paste form which they had concealed in their rectum and inner wear. The value of the seized gold of 24 karat purity was put at ₹59.30 lakh. Among the five, two passengers were from Ilayangudi in Sivaganga district, the remaining three were from Chennai, Tiruppur and Tiruchi. Further investigation was on.
