1,538 polling booths in Pudukottai district

A total number of 1,538 polling booths have been established in the district for the general elections slated next month, Collector and District Election Officer P. Uma Maheswari said on Monday.

As many as 3,737 electronic voting machines, 1,923 control units and 1,999 Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) have been allocated for the polling booths in the district, Ms. Uma Maheswari told reporters here.

The Collector said 25 per cent electronic voting machines and control units have been allocated additionally besides 30 per cent additional VVPAT equipment for the district.

With less than a month to go for the elections, the exercise of shifting the electronic voting machines from the strong room of the District Collectorate to the respective taluk office strong room of the Assembly segments concerned was carried out on Monday.

Inaugurating the exercise, Ms. Uma Maheswari said steps have been taken to install surveillance cameras in the strong rooms where the electronic voting machines were kept coupled with round-the-clock police protection.

Necessary basic facilities have been created at the polling booths to ensure that the electorate exercise their franchise without any hassle, she said adding that various poll-related works were being carried out by the district administration.
