14 check dams to come across Cauvery tributaries

Tenders had been finalised by the Public Works Department (PWD) for the construction of 11 grade walls and 14 check dams across the various tributaries of river Cavuery in Thanjavur district at an outlay of Rs 67.68 crore.

The project funded by National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) under its Rural Infrastructure Development Scheme (RIDS) for the year 2013-14.

Works include construction of a grade walls across Cauvery to feed Koothur channel and old Maharajapuram channel in Koothur village in Thiruvaiyaru taluk, New Umayalpuram channel in Ramanujapuram village of Papanasam taluk, old Kanjanur channel in Namachivayapuram and New Kanjanur channel in Manaloor in Thiruvidaimaruthur taluk, grade wall across Kodamuruti river to feed Konerirajapuram supplement channel and Konerirajapuram channel in Konerirajapuram village of Thiruvaiyaru taluk.

Bed dams will be constructed in Vallam Vari, Solagampatti drain , Konavari drain in Kalvirayapettai village, Jampukapuram vari in Orathanadu taluk, Muthalaimuthu vari at Vannarapettai village, Nasuviniyar drain in Thittakudi village, Pattuvanachi vari in Veppankulam village.

PWD engineers said that lowering bed level due to erosion has affected the supply of water to the channelsConstruction of bed dams, ground water table will also increase considerably.
