127 sovereigns gold, 4 kg silver stolen

One hundred and twenty seven sovereigns of gold jewellery, four kg of silver articles, and Rs. 1 lakh were looted from a house on the III Cross at Periyar Nagar near Easwari Nagar in Thanjavur.

According to the police, the burglary was noticed on Friday, when the owner of the house Sivakumar (55), working at the District Head Quarters hospital at Kumbakonam as a general surgeon, retuned from Chennai to where he went with his wife and locking the house on April 30.

Mr. Sivakumar, who returned home this morning, noticed that the lock in the grill gate of his house was broken. Later, he found the wooden door was tampered with. When he entered the house, two rooms were found ransacked and a cupboard in which the jewellery and cash were kept was broken open.

The value of the looted property was said to be Rs. 27 lakh. T.S. Anbu, Superintendent of Police, Thanjavaur district and Arjunan, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Thanjavur town, visited the house. Police dogs were pressed into service. Fingerprint experts visited the house. Medical College Hospital police have registered a case.
