117 desilting works completed: Collector

Out of a total of 191 desilting works taken up in rivers, canals and drainage channels in Thanjavur district this year 117 have been completed till Thursday said K. Baskaran, District Collector here on Thursday.

He inspected the desilting works going on in Thiruvaiyaru and Papanasam taluks. It has been planned to desilt to a distance of 602.21 kms. So far 384 kms have been desilted.

The Collector saw the desilting works in Kandiyur drainage channel at Kandiyur village, Valavankoil canal in Papanasam taluk, Vannan Vaikkal in Eachankudi village, Someswaran canal and Thuriyar in Veeramangudi village.

The Collector said that with respect to rivers, twelve out of fourteen works have been completed. Out of a total distance of 23.50 kms, desilting had been completed on 22.20 kms. With respect to canals eighty works have been completed out of 106 works taken up. With respect to drainage channels 25 works have been completed out of 71 works.

P. Ravichandran, Executive Engineer, PWD, Cauvery division and K. Nehru, Executive Engineer, Vennar division, accompanied the Collector during his visit.
