Tiruchi corporation, which is spearheading the concept of producing organic manure from domestic wet waste, has decided to distribute at least 1,000 earthen pots to households to set up home compost units.
It is one among several methods of home composting being promoted by the corporation. It is said to have taken the decision to promote earthen pots composting based on reports of widespread adoption of the method by Bengaluru residents. It requires at least three pots, each about one feet high, and a plate to cover the top one. The pots should have small holes for aeration.
Corporation Commissioner N. Ravichandran told The Hindu that it had been decided to distribute three earthen pots each to at least 1,000 households. The residents would be given spot training on methods to be followed for composting wet waste. It was an easy method and affordable too, he said.
The services of a pot maker was been roped in to produce as many pots as possible. The cost would be met by sourcing from the fund allotted by companies and banks for Corporate Social Responsibility activities.
Mr. Ravichandran said that to popularise home composting methods, the Corporation would arrange a two-day exhibition on Saturday and Sunday at Kalaiarangam in the city. The companies, which have developed home composting designs and models, would exhibit their products.
