1 kg gold jewellery stolen from shop

Unidentified persons looted nearly one kilogram of gold jewellery and 13 kilograms of silver articles from a jewellery shop in the city late on Tuesday night.

The culprits broke the grill gate locks and lifted the shutter to gain entry into the shop situated at Geetha Nagar on the Vayalur Road and took away the valuables kept inside the bureau.

The value of the stolen property has been put at Rs. 12 lakh. Three special teams have been formed to apprehend the culprits.

The daring burglary comes a day after the City Police authorities constituted five special teams to apprehend criminal gangs involved in property crimes within the city limits.

Commissioner of Police K. Vanniaperumal accompanied by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) R. Tamil Chandran and senior city police officials visited the scene of crime and conducted enquiries.

The sources said the shop did not have a burglar alarm and the culprits had reportedly snapped the power supply to the street lights before committing the crime.

The services of finger print experts were utilised. A sniffer dog was brought to the scene of crime.

New shop

Woraiyur (Crime) Police have registered a case on a complaint lodged by shop manager P. Sekar. The shop, owned by Selvaraj, was started a few months ago.

As a sequel to the incident, a Sub Inspector of Police and two Head Constables who were on night rounds in a patrol vehicle in that area on Tuesday night were shifted to the City Armed Reserve, the sources said.

Only a few days back had unknown culprits entered the house of a college teacher in Kumaran Nagar in Woraiyur Crime Police Station limit and stolen over 14 sovereigns of gold jewellery.
