Women’s panel to the aid of 90-year-old petitioner

Asks children to give her 10% of proceeds from property sale

A 90-year-old woman with nine children was allegedly abandoned after her property was divided between her three sons.

The woman had reportedly agreed to the demand to hand over the property on the assurance that she would be cared for.

On Monday, she was among several women who approached the Kerala Women’s Commission for justice at a Mega Adalat at the Rest House, Thycaud. In her case, the commission ordered the sons to transfer 10% of the proceeds from the sale of the property to their mother.

If the order is not obeyed, the commission would take steps to ensure that the property gets reverted to her, commission member Shahida Kamal said.

Disputes on the rise

Property-related disputes and the tendency to abandon parents after forcing them to bequeath property in the children’s names are increasing in the State, commission members E.M. Radha and Ms. Kamal noted during an interaction with the media after the adalat. Another case pertained to an 85-year-old woman who allegedly was not being cared for by her children and in-laws, all doctors.

In all, 170 cases were taken up by the commission. Thirty-seven were disposed of. In eight cases, the commission has sought reports, and, in another four cases, held counselling sessions. The adalat will continue on Tuesday.
