The State Women’s Commission (SWC) has recommended action against an individual who sold off his mother’s property to a stone quarry, without her knowledge.
The petition filed by the elderly woman at the SWC seeking a compensation of ₹15 lakh from her son towards her treatment and other expenses was taken up for hearing at a mini-adalat held by the commission on Thursday.
The mother had handed over her property to the son on condition that she would be taken care of and protected in her old age. However, she had approached the commission upon learning that the son had drawn up an agreement to sell off the property for ₹65 lakh on the sly.
The SWC had earlier ordered the son to pay his mother ₹10 lakh. However, instead of paying the money, on the very next day of receiving the order, the man had drawn up an agreement to sell the property.
The SWC will take stringent action against those who abandon or do not take proper care of their parents, SWC member Shahida Kemal said.
A total of 60 complaints were taken up at the mini adalat, out of which, settlement was reached in 11 cases. Two cases were sent for counselling and the Commission sought reports in the case of seven. The rest of the cases would be considered in the next adalat.
