Women and children are becoming the main prey and victim of all major challenges across the globe, World Council of Churches moderator Agnes Regina Murei Abuom has said.

Ms. Abuom was delivering the keynote address at the World Mar Thoma Women’s Meet held at Maramon, near Kozhencherry, on Saturday.

The global meet was organised by the Mar Thoma Sevika Sanghom, women’s organisation of the Mar Thoma Church, to mark the beginning of its year-long centenary celebrations.

Ms. Abuom said women have achieved equality with men in all walks of life, including politics, administration, economics, science and technology.

‘Changes unacceptable’

But, the world was yet to accept these changes in its entirety and women were often found to have been alienated in facing certain challenges arising out of her social circumstances, she said.

Women and children were also becoming prey to human trafficking, she said.

The Mar Thoma Metropolitan Joseph Mar Thoma inaugurated the day-long women’s meet.

Anne Mathews Younes, president, E. Stanley Jones Foundation and granddaughter of the world renowned evangelist Stanley Jones, delivered the keynote address. Bishops, clergy and around a lakh MTSS members attended the meet.

A 100-member choir of the Church rendered Christian devotional songs on the occasion.

Marykkutty George, MTSS general secretary, and Mini T.Alex, treasurer, also spoke. Philipose Mar Chrysostum, Metropolitan Emeritus, led the prayer session at the beginning.

Oommen Chandy, former Chief Minister; Anto Antony, MP; Adoor Prakash, Raju Abraham, and Veena George, MLAs; were among those who attended the meet
