Women’s college gets new library

A new library building, with four floors dedicated to books, opened its doors to students at Government College for Women, Vazhuthacaud, on Thursday.

The building was inaugurated by Minister for Education C. Ravindranath. It was constructed by the Habitat group, using ₹3 crore sanctioned by the State government. The foundation stone was laid in May 2015. “We plan to develop this into a mini-university library,” says selection grade librarian N. Vijayakumar.

The ground floor houses the general reading section, periodical section, issue and returns counter, and reference bookshelves with dictionaries and encyclopaedias. “Internet can be accessed on any floor,” he says. Issue and return of books are done using a software, which also allows students to locate books easily. They have to log on to the online public access catalogue (OPAC), a centralised search facility to ascertain book information, including availability and location. Students can also reserve a book using the software. This facility is available on all floors. “Students (and teachers) can look up a book and pick it up. It saves time,” Mr. Vijayakumar says.

The book classification is done according to the Dewey Decimal Classification, an internationally accepted system.

The first floor has books devoted to various subjects. Reprographic facilities are also available here. The second floor has Malayalam literature books.

Besides the cyber centre, there is a research section on the third floor. “Most of the teachers here are guides. So, students have been provided the research facility.” There are small reading areas on the first and second floors too. There is lift facility too.

The library is set to embark on digitisation of rare books. “The government has sanctioned us ₹10 lakh for this. Formalities for this are under way.” Rare Malayalam books, teachers’ theses, old college magazines, and rare college documents will be digitised, he says.

The college has 92,000 books, including those in department libraries.
