After nine days of untiring efforts from a large group of young volunteers, the flood relief material collection centre at Priyadarshini hall was closed on Sunday.
Volunteers were actively involved in various activities including unloading, loading, sorting, packing and dispatching flood relief collection material.
“For the past 9 days, the activities in the auditorium has been running full swing to provide flood relief material to the affected masses in the various districts of Kerala.
Around 60 truck loads containing tonnes of food, clothes, medicines, stationary, sanitary napkins, utensils, toiletries, cleaning equipment, drinking water and other household material were sent from here, with the help of almost 2,000 volunteers. The continuous nine-day volunteering activities have strengthened the bond between the volunteers,” said Athira.G.Nair, a volunteer at the centre.
Students from various colleges, schools and civil service aspirants played a key role in ensuring timely supply of adequate materials. Working professionals from public sector and private firms too pitched in.
On the final day, the volunteers arranged boxes of chocolate with a small positive message to be distributed to the various relief camps.
At Nishagandhi
The relief collection centre at the Nishagandhi auditorium was wound up late Sunday.
Relief goods will be accepted at the ground floor of the old local head office of the State Bank of India on SS Kovil Road, Thampanoor, on Monday.
According to an official release, the district administration has dispatched a total of 560 loads of relief commodities to the flood-affected districts.
Two relief camps, which were opened in the wake of the floods, continued to function in the district on Sunday.
These functioned in the Buds school in Anad village and the Mallambrakonam anganvadi in Karipur village in the Nedumangad taluk.
Nine persons belonging to three families have been accommodated in the relief camp in Anad, while six persons of two families remained at the camp in Karipur, official sources said.
