: Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan has called upon the government to notify minimum wages of plantation workers immediately to settle the Munnar estate workers’ strike.

In a statement here on Tuesday, Mr. Achuthanandan said the government had the power to notify minimum wages under the Plantation Labour Act.

The last LDF government had done so.

The present government could also do the same if was sincere about resolving the dispute in favour of the workers.

The notification should be issued before the next meeting of the Plantation Labour Committee (PLC). The PLC meetings were turning out to be a farce.

If the government is not able to settle the strike, he would personally lead a massive public agitation in support of the workers, the Opposition Leader said.

Mr. Achuthanandan also called for convening a special session of the Kerala Assembly to discuss the problems in the plantation sector and take steps to address the grievances of the plantation workers.
