Varkala to have new civic chief

June 05, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:54 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The Kerala High Court’s order upholding the disqualification of the chairperson and four councillors of Varkala municipality has paved the way for election of a new chairperson.

Varkala municipal secretary Samji David told The Hindu that he was waiting to get a copy of the court order to further proceed with the election.

“I will submit a report to the State Election Commissioner in a day or two. The election will be held after that,” he said.

In March this year, the Commission had disqualified chairperson Surya Prakash and four councillors under the anti-defection law.

Mr. Prakash was elected to the local body on Congress ticket.

Acting on a complaint, the State Election Commissioner disqualified the members.
