V. K. Prasanth elected Thiruvananthapuram Mayor

Left Democratic Front nominee and first-time CPI(M) councillor V. K. Prasanth was on Wednesday elected by the Corporation Council as the 44th City Mayor.

The 34-year-old Prasanth is the youngest to become the Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram City Corporation. In the elections, Mr. Prasanth defeated Girikumar of the BJP. The United Democratic Front nominee and Congress councillor Johnson Joseph fielded for the post was eliminated in the first round. In the 100 member council, the LDF has 42 councillors, BJP 34 and UDF 21.

A lawyer by profession, Mr. Prasanth is a member of CPI (M) Kazhakootttam area committee and DYFI district secretariat. He wrested the seat from UDF defeating BJP's A.P. S. Nair by 3,272 votes, the highest majority secured by a candidate in the corporation in the November 2 elections.
