Trawl ban: arrangements to be made at Vizhinjam

May 26, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 06:00 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The district administration will make necessary arrangements for traditional fishermen at the Vizhinjam fishing harbour ahead of the trawl ban from June 1.

A meeting of government officials and the departments concerned, convened by District Collector Biju Prabhakar here on Monday, discussed the arrangements required for the fishermen and to avoid law-and-order issues.

The police would keep a close watch on the area and a check-post too would be set up near the harbour to avoid traffic-related issues, an official press release said.

Inspections

Apart from inspections at night and by senior officials, including the Collector, the police and the Excise departments would monitor the Vizhinjam region to prevent inflow of liquor and drugs. The Kerala State Electricity Board had been asked to ensure uninterrupted supply of power in the area.

The Disaster Management Authority’s long-range search and emergency ASKA lights too would be used, if necessary.

Two water tanks of 5,000 litres each would be installed in the area, with arrangements to be made for more tanks if need be, the Collector said. The existing latrines at the harbour would be renovated with help from the Harbour Engineering Department. Medical services too would be extended to fishermen with a ‘108’ ambulance to be made available whenever necessary.

Monitoring panel

The Collector, who directed fishermen to use single lights on their boats while fishing in the night, said local monitoring committees would be constituted to ensure smooth implementation of the decisions during the ban period.
