They remain tight-lipped on ‘moral policing’ and ‘Kiss of Love,’ the topics of the past week

Some silences speak louder than the loudest of slogans. The big stars of Malayalam cinema have yet again maintained their silence through a tumultuous week when a wave of protest came up against the growing trend of ‘moral policing’ and a million conversations happened around it, from television studios to drawing rooms. Barring a few female actors who responded to queries from some media, all the biggies opted to stay away from the conversations and the possible controversies that their involvement could generate.

Their speaking on this occasion was important, since many who vehemently opposed the ‘Kiss of Love’ protest with online comments and offline behaviour reeking of extreme misogyny, happen to be huge fans of these actors too (as evident from a random sampling of their Facebook profiles). Their words — assuming they would be against moral policing — could have had some effect on these rampaging groups.

Another less-discussed point during the week was the influence of the larger-than-life characters who mouth lines like

“You are just a woman”, to much applause, on the behaviour of the vigilante groups, online and offline. At least for all these ‘sins’, they had to make amends and speak out loud.

Maybe, they were better off being silent, lest they further harm the cause with some negative comment.
