The city police have made the maximum detentions under the provisions of the Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act (KAAPA) in the State, City Police Commissioner P. Vijayan has said.
The city police had detained 40 criminals under KAAPA while the number of goons detained under the Act across the State was 169.
The next highest detention rate was in Kollam city where 23 goons had been detained, Mr. Vijayan said in a statement here on Tuesday.
In the city, the most number of criminals detained under the Act was under the leadership of the Assistant Commissioner, Cantonment, whose team detained 17 known criminals. The Fort subdivision made 13 detentions and Shangumugham made eight.
The criminals detained under the Act included Ajith Kumar, alias ‘Ammaykoru Makan Soju, an accused in three murder cases and wanted in 22 assault cases. He was arrested from Rajasthan by a team led by Sheen Tharayil, Circle Inspector, Thampanoor. Circle Inspector, Peroorkada, Pradeep and his team made the first detention under KAAPA of a loan shark in the State when they detained Suresh, alias Abu. Shibu, alias Kuppi Shibu, notorious with the sand mafia; Madhu alias Karava Madhu; Kumar, alias Kallan Kumar; and Shyju, alias ‘Garbhini’ Shyju; were among the others detained in 2013 under KAAPA.
Sreejith, alias Unni ,was the one who was detained the most under the Act, with the Poojapura police detaining him five times in the last one year under the Act, Mr. Vijayan said.
The provisions of the Act would continue to be invoked to curb criminal activity in the city, he said.
