Offers prayers at Padmanabhaswamy Temple

President Pranab Mukherjee has termed his visit to Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple here ‘an experience in self-spirituality.’

After offering prayers at the temple on Saturday, Mr. Mukherjee wrote in the visitors’ diary that his visit to the temple was ‘an experience in self spirituality with tradition and culture.’ He further wrote that it was a truly unique experience.

Just before winding up his visit to the State, the President, accompanied by Governor Sheila Dikshit, visited the temple around 10.30 a.m. and spent 45 minutes offering prayers and gathering information related to the rich history of the temple.

Upon reaching the temple, he was received by chief executive officer of the temple K.N. Sathiesh and other committee members. S. Vijaya Kumar, one of the members of the committee appointed by Supreme Court, told The Hindu that the President was taken around the temple premises and near the main vault, where the temple treasures were kept.

The President expressed keen interest in knowing about the treasure, its value and how it reached the hands of the ruling family. He was quite fascinated about the stunning sculptures in the Kulasekhara mandapam, Mr. Kumar said.

The president was presented with an ‘Ona villu’ and a replica of the presiding deity.

Minor fire

Security was tightened in and around West Fort in view of the President’s visit. A minor fire inside a fruit shop at West Fort before the arrival of Mr. Mukherjee put the security personnel in a tizzy.

Minister for Health V.S. Sivakumar, Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor, District Collector Biju Prabhakar, Additional District Sessions Judge-cum-Chairperson of the temple committee K.P. Indira, head of the ruling family of erstwhile Travancore Moolam Tirunal Rama Varma and senior officers were present.
