Tax exemption for fish workers’ flats

The city Corporation has exempted from property tax the 174 flats at Muttathara constructed by the State government to rehabilitate fish worker families from the city’s coastal areas, who had lost their houses to sea erosion in recent years.

Minister’s request

Fisheries Minister J. Mercykutty Amma had earlier requested the Mayor to consider the exemption as many of the fish workers might not be able to afford the hefty tax. The Minister had also held discussions with the Mayor and other officials, following which the decision was taken.
