They walked up the Collectorate stairs holding bundles that seemed to weigh as much as they did. But this was not a chore for them. Rather, the students of Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Pattom, had brought rice, condiments, notebooks, and new clothes for those affected by the rain and floods.

Essential items

The first batch of relief for those living in relief camps, these included pulses, brush, paste, soap, washing powder, towels, bedsheets, blankets, and sanitary napkins — everything that those living in camps will need. They also brought 500 pens and pencils for children.

These had been collected by the students and teachers of the school. The school’s charity, Souhruda, and NSS clubs led the collection.

The relief material was received by ADM V.R. Vinod. The children’s actions were a model for others, he said. Headmaster Raveenji H.M. and Principal N. Retnakumar, teachers, and 25 students brought the material.
