Student tries to cut a vein on arm

An alleged attempt by a second year degree student to harm himself by cutting a vein on his arm in an engineering college at Kattakada on Thursday triggered protests against the college management by students’ organisations, which were continuing late into the night.

The police, identifying the student as Ajith, 19, said he had been asked at the University to get a letter from the college principal if he was to be allowed exemption to write examinations after he fell short of attendance. He had reached the Principal’s office for this purpose and was asked to wait outside, which was when he cut a vein on his arm.

He was rushed to the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital, where he is still under treatment.

However, students’ organisations including the Students Federation of India have launched protests, accusing the college principal of refusing to give the letter, which would have allowed Ajith to appear for the examinations.
