Against the backdrop of the Health Department serving notices on 78 schools in the district for lack of health infrastructure, the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) has decided to conduct a week-long inspection at government schools to check the general hygiene standards.
Last month, the department served notices on schools, mostly aided ones, for glaring deficiencies in maintaining general hygiene on the campuses, particularly in kitchens and urinals. Last month’s inspection had even led to the closure of a private school as it lacked hygiene standards, posing a threat to the life of students.
Sources in the department told The Hindu that notices were served on schools which had no power connections, and had unhygienic classrooms, kitchen and toilets.
“We have formed several teams in the district to check whether schools funded by the SSA maintain hygiene standards. The inspection will be done first in lower primary schools and then in upper primary level. If the schools are found wanting in hygiene, action will be taken,” District Project Officer, SSA, M. Rajesh told The Hindu .
Funds for improving hygiene standards was not a problem in SSA-governed schools, the official said.
