Solution in sight to Attingal’s traffic woes

June 30, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:51 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The three-km NH-66 stretch from Moonnumukku to Poovanpara in Attingal will be widened further by 20 metres to tackle traffic congestion in Attingal town.

A sum of Rs.22.75 crore has been sanctioned by the government for the works which will be carried out by the Public Works Department (National Highway) wing.

The administrative sanction was given based on the decisions taken at the high-level meeting convened by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on December 31, 2014, to solve Attingal town’s traffic issues.

Study held

The National Transportation Planning and Research Centre (Natpac) had carried out the study to assess the problems and had suggested remedies.

The Natpac study found that lack of adequate carriageway to cater to the vehicular traffic, particularly at intersections, was the main problem. During peak hour, around 3,000 vehicles cross the three-arm junction.

In addition, more than 3,200 pedestrians move along the road a given day. On an average, 19 cars and 21 two-wheelers pass the junction every minute.

The Attingal municipality had promised to allot free land for the road-widening.

Rs.22.75 crore sanctioned for widening of 3-km national highway stretch.
