The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has ordered an inquiry into the incident where a Youth Congress (YC) activist was allegedly beaten up earlier this month by a group of policemen led by Sub-Inspector K.L. Sampath, former Station House Officer of the Nemom police station.

Mr. Sampath and others had allegedly assaulted Sajeer, a YC member and resident of Vellayani, when he visited the Nemom police station to seek the bail of another person on May 14.

After the assault, the policemen took him to the Thiruvallam police station and left the scene, according to the complaint Sajeer submitted to the SHRC. He sustained severe injuries to his spine in the assault, and had to undergo two surgeries at the Government General Hospital here. Mr. Sampath and civil police officer Ajayakumar were suspended following the incident.

The commission has directed the Chief Secretary to submit an inquiry report within three weeks.

The City Police Commissioner has been asked to submit an investigative report, while Mr. Sampath and Mr. Ajayakumar have been asked to file separate testaments.
