October 07, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 08:10 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The draft of manifesto of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) for elections to the district panchayat gives stress on improving infrastructure and teaching facility at government schools, augmenting facilities in hospitals handed over to the local body and setting up of small industrial estates in rural areas.

The draft, prepared after collating suggestions gathered from the public, says, if voted to power, the front will carryout a ‘Higher Secondary Education Mission,’ with the support of experts, teachers, Parent Teacher Associations and social organisations to ensure that the schools achieve cent per cent results in SSLC and Plus-Two examinations. Providing water purifiers, construction of stadiums, setting up of smart classrooms and new classrooms are among the plans.

Special coaching will be given to students from Class VII onwards for Civil Services examinations and to improve proficiency in English. A special package to improve the physical and mental health of differently-abled children will be implemented, the draft says.

Infrastructure facility at district hospitals will be improved by providing new blocks and setting up laboratories.

'Doctors from Regional Cancer Centre will be roped in to conduct regular cancer detection camps in rural areas.

Other sectors

The manifesto also lists out programmes in sectors such as agriculture, animal husbandry, fisheries, women’s welfare, power and road.

Former district panchayat president Anavoor Nagappan read out the draft at a function organised by the district unit of the LDF on Tuesday.

Inaugurating the symposium, CPI leader C. Divakaran said the civic body elections would see whether the communal agenda of the Bharatiya Janata Party would flourish in the State. He urged the public to shoulder the responsibility of defeating communal forces and the ‘scam-ridden’ United Democratic Front.
