A 14-year-old boy was found hanging in his room at Manacaud in the city late last night, reportedly after he was reprimanded by school authorities on Friday.

According to the Fort police, the boy, a Class IX student of the Sarvodaya Central Vidyalaya, Nalanchira, was summoned along with his mother and grandmother to the Principal's office on Friday after a girl student alleged that he was harassing her with e-mails. The boy, who was living with his grandmother after his parents were separated and mother got remarried, was reportedly in a disconsolate state of mind after the incident. He was found hanging in his room late in the night and though he was rushed to the Medical College Hospital, he was pronounced brought dead.

Case registered

Fort Circle Inspector S.Y. Suresh told The Hindu , quoting the boy's relatives, that he was upset over being scolded at school in front of his mother and grandmother, both of whom were summoned by the school authorities. “However, we are yet to take statements from his mother and grandmother and will launch an inquiry into the role of the school authorities only after that. As of now, we have registered a case of unnatural death. An inquest has been conducted and the body has been handed over to relatives,” Mr. Suresh said.

School's version

Meanwhile, K.T. Cherian Panicker, Principal of the school, issued a statement to the media here on Saturday, incidentally identifying the boy, a minor, by his name and class, saying that he had spoken to the boy “politely” and that he was discharging his duties as Principal with “patience and care.”

Mr. Panicker said he had spoken to the boy in front of his mother and grandmother, telling him that there was a complaint against him.

The boy had denied the allegation, following which he was told that a committee would examine the issue, the statement said.

A committee, including female teachers, had been constituted on Friday itself to look into the complaint, the statement, which made no mention of the boy's death, said.
