The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has ordered the Director of Medical Education to constitute an independent medical board to inquire into the incident in whcih a youth lost his eyesight, allegedly after he was administered an injection at the casualty wing of the Government Medical College Hospital (MCH), Thiruvananthapuram, in 2009.

Report ‘unsatisfactory’

The commission issued the directive after it found the incident report submitted by an Additional Professor at MCH to be ‘unsatisfactory.’

The complainant, Shafique, a native of Karamana, submitted before the commission that he was referred to the MCH casualty from a private hospital.

The petitioner said that following an injection he was administered at the casualty, he developed severe allergic reaction.

He was administered penicillin, despite his caution that he was allergic to it. He lost his eyesight and means of livelihood, he said in the complaint.

The MCH authorities, in their report before the SHRC, said the youth had lost his eyesight following ‘faulty treatment’ received at the private hospital.
