The Kerala State Commission for Human Rights has directed that ₹2 lakh be paid for the treatment and care of a student whose right leg had to be amputated below the knee following an accident in a Buds school under the grama panchayat.
Commission chairperson Antony Dominic directed that the money be paid from the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund.
The directive comes on a complaint by Vasanthammal of Anad, Nedumangad. Her daughter was a student in the Buds school under the Anad grama panchayat. On November 2, 2018, the girl injured her right leg when it hit a tile at the school. The wound did not heal and the leg had to be amputated below the knee. A lot of money was spent on the treatment but neither the school authorities nor the panchayat helped.
Panchayat’s report
The commission sought a report from the Anad panchayat secretary. The report said that the girl was a diabetic and even before the accident, her toes were swollen and infected.
However, Vasanthammal argued that had the school authorities provided proper treatment right after the accident, her daughter’s leg could have been saved. The girl’s toes were neither swollen nor infected before the accident, she said.
