Rich diversity of flora, fauna

The biodiversity register of the Sasthamcotta lake released here last week, has recorded the presence of 159 plant species in the catchment area, including those belonging to the endangered and near-threatened categories.

The document lists each of the species by name, scientific nomenclature, family and Malayalam name.

It mentions 30 species of fish, including one vulnerable and two near- threatened species, which depend on the wetland for food, spawning and nursery. The register also lists 60 different species of birds, nine mammals, and six reptiles including snakes, lizards, and monitors.

The joint BMC also found 41 butterflies, six amphibians, 11 insects and 12 odonates including gliders, darts and skimmers.
