Rap for shops, malls over parking

Police ask civic body to take action against 23 establishments

June 18, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:43 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

Several major shopping malls and commercial buildings in the city are likely to be in the dock for not providing adequate parking facilities, which, the police say, causes obstructive parking.

The City police, in a recent letter to the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, have listed 23 such establishments, which have not earmarked parking place as per their building plans. The police allege foul play by the building owners.

The letter, sent to the Corporation Secretary on June 13 by K. Sanjaykumar Gurudin, Deputy Commissioner (Law and Order), says that obstructive parking is a major problem in the city. Majority of such parking is in front of shopping malls and commercial buildings where vehicles are left unattended for long duration, hindering traffic, and leaving a cascading effect on the city’s vehicular flow.

As per norms, all these major buildings and shopping complexes are supposed to have their own parking places. Only if such places are provided can their plan for construction be approved by the Corporation, the letter says.

Inspections and traffic observations by the police in these spots found no earmarked parking place as per the building plan.

The Corporation has been asked to view the violation of building plans seriously and deal with it legally. Some of these have underground or cellar parking, but not adequately, and not quite in proportion with the space that should be provided when the size of the building was considered.
