Rainy start to municipal polls in Thiruvananthapuram

Persistent showers, which have been lashing the city over the last two days, are threatening to prove a dampener for the polling in the City Corporation, four municipalities and 73 grama panchayats in the capital district, which began here at 7 a.m..

A total of 25.99 lakh voters, 13.71 lakh of them women, are expected to exercise their franchise in 3,255 polling booths, with the choice being from among 6,526 candidates. As many as 3,323 of these are women.

The election, which is witnessing the use of electronic voting machines for the first time in local body polls in Kerala, has over 6,500 policemen deployed across the district to maintain law and order.
