Protesters caned in Thiruvananthapuram

A protest against the Securitisation and Reconstruction of Financial Assets and Enforcement of Security Interest (SARFAESI) Act in front of the Secretariat here on Wednesday turned violent after the police caned protesters, including women.

The protest, which was in continuation of a 79-day strike in front of the Ernakulam District Collectorate and brought to the Secretariat six days back, turned violent after some of the women agitators tried to cook rice and the police objected to it. With some policemen allegedly throwing away the utensils, the women protested, leading to a lathi-charge. Eight persons, including three women and two policemen, were injured in the violent episodes that followed.

The dust settled after Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) K. Sanjay Kumar Gurudin intervened and gave permission for the women to carry on with their cooking, the agitators said here.
