Protect secular ethos of State: Moily

Tributes to Karunakaran on death anniversary

Senior Congress leader Veerappa Moily has emphasised the need to protect the secular character that is the hallmark of Kerala politics.

Addressing the eighth death anniversary observance of K. Karunakaran here, Mr. Moily said the former Chief Minister had endeavoured not to sway the Congress party away from the secular mainstream. “He was an outstanding leader and a role model who infused ‘secular blood’ into the political fabric of the State.

“He did not mix religion with politics,” Mr. Moily said.

Likening the Congress to a giant banyan tree rooted in the hearts of the people, he urged party workers to take care not to cut the roots. He underlined the importance of team work in party building. Karunakaran was a leader who had utmost faith in team work, Mr. Moily said.

Team work

He said while individuals could contribute, it was team work that ensured the process of building. The United Democratic Front (UDF), the coalition that Karunakaran pioneered, had remained intact, playing the all-important role of keeping communal parties at bay, Mr. Moily said.
