The Thiruvananthapuram Rural police have said that they are hot on the heels of a gang of robbers which broke into the house of an aged couple at Menamkulam on May 10 and decamped with gold ornaments and other valuables.

R. Prathapan Nair, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Attingal), said a breakthrough was expected in a couple of days.

Local police sources, indicated that a group of construction labourers, reportedly contracted by the couple for work at their house a couple of months ago, were the prime suspects. However, the men were absconding and a hunt was on to nab them.

Around 2 a.m. on May 10, a gang of men, reportedly four in number, had tied up Shanta, 74, and looted the house of gold and valuables to the tune of Rs.7 lakh.

They had gagged her with a cloth before fleeing the spot. Shanta’s husband Sahadevan was not harmed since he was bedridden.
