The power plant of a Base Trans-receiver Station (BTS) tower at Poojappura, in Thiruvananthapuram, was gutted in a fire on Thursday afternoon.

The Fire and Rescue Service rushed two fire tenders to the spot to douse the flames. Fire force Divisional Officer R. Prasad told The Hindu that the BTS tower and the power plant, atop a commercial building, were shared by four private mobile service providers.

The equipments belonging to Airtel and Vodafone located inside the power plant were destroyed in the incident. “The mobile company that runs the tower got an alarm at 12.10 p.m.. Within two minutes, the whole structure was on fire. The flames did not spread to the tower which is just a few feet away,” Mr. Prasad explained.

There were many people in the offices and shops in the building below the tower at the time of the incident. No one was injured.
