Power board workers across the country would go on strike on December 8 against the Narendra Modi government’s decision to introduce the Electricity (Amendment) Bill in the winter session of Parliament.
All India Federation of Electricity Employees (AIFEE) deputy general secretary A.N. Rajan said in a statement here on Saturday that the National Coordination Committee of Electricity Employees and Engineers (NCCOEEE) has decided to organise the countrywide strike following the government’s refusal to withdraw the bill which seeks to privatise power distribution and further unbundling of State power utilities.
The NCCOEEE has also decided to hold a march to the venue of the national Power Ministers’ conference being held in Kochi on November 6 to press its demands. Power workers from Kerala and Tamil Nadu would participate in large numbers in the march, which would also have representatives of employees and engineers from different States as participants. Despite repeated pleas, the Central government has refused to hold any discussion with the employees on the bill. The strike is to resist the undemocratic attitude of the government on the issue, Mr. Rajan said.
