The Commissioner of Railway Safety, Southern Circle, Bengaluru, has given the nod to operate passenger trains in the 54.72-km stretch of Pollachi Junction-Palakkad Town stations.
Commissioner S.K. Mittal has given the authorisation to the Palakkad divisional railway authorities to run passenger trains in the stretch at a maximum speed of 80 km an hour subject to technical stipulations. The communication to this effect reached the division on Thursday.
The mandatory nod comes within two days of the safety inspection of newly laid broad gauge line. The speed trial run from Pollachi Junction was carried out on October 6.
A top railway official told The Hindu that the railways were considering running trains from Pollachi side soon as a formal inauguration could not be held in the State due to the model code of conduct in view of the local body elections.
Passenger trains would begin services on October 15, the 100th anniversary of the Pollachi railway station, he said.
