Poll result not decided by community forums: Kanam

‘Govt. always strived to maintain cordial ties with NSS’

Communist Party of India (CPI) State secretary Kanam Rajendran has said that electoral outcomes were seldom decided by the diktats of community organisations. The Left Democratic Front (LDF)’s comfortable victory at the 2016 Assembly elections in the face of opposition by such groups was testimony to this, he said.

Participating in a meet-the-press programme at the Thiruvananthapuram Press Club here on Tuesday, Mr. Rajendran pointed out that the LDF did not intend to adopt a confrontational stance towards the Nair Service Society (NSS) or any other organisation. He said that the government had always strived to maintain cordial relations with the NSS.

“The NSS general secretary [G. Sukumaran Nair] has stated that the organisation has cooperated with the government on all matters, except the Sabarimala women-entry issue. In the particular issue, the government was bound by its duty to implement the Supreme Court verdict,” he said.

On the reported comments by NSS Thiruvananthapuram taluk union president M. Sangeeth Kumar that the organisation would campaign for the victory of K. Mohan Kumar, the United Democratic Front candidate in Vattiyurkavu, he said that the NSS had always taken decisions in Perunna.
